The Ministry of Environment & climate change implements various pollution controls directly and through the Central and State Pollution Control Boards. These agencies are responsible for controlling the discharge of wastes and pollutants into the environment and issuing a PCB certificate to the industries that abide by the norms and regulations.
Having PCB certificate allows for safer and legal trade of hazardous waste material. Better treatment of this waste is crucial for a country's economy and is important for maintaining the health of its citizens.
Any industry, which discharges sewage or effluent into the environment or emits any pollutant in the air has to obtain the consent of the State Pollution Control Board in the form of a Pollution Control Board certificate. Similarly, any industry/process generating, storing, transporting, treating, disposing or handling hazardous waste are required to obtain authorization.
